Opportunity of a Lifetime profiles a diverse group of 24 low-income high school students from northern and central California who share the dream of attending college and becoming health professionals. Each summer, the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP) opens the doors of Stanford University to students who have overcome personal hardships. During a five-week summer residential program, it introduces students to the worlds of science, medicine, and academics. It also offers educational enrichment in the biological and medical sciences and college admissions support to students while at the same time facilitating interactions with peers and mentors. This film documents a life-changing experience for the students and their families and inspires viewers through interviews with the student participants, their families, and the Stanford student-counselors who guide the students through the program. (All proceeds fund student scholarships.) This video is a companion piece to the Healing Journeys book.
