| Healing Journeys: Teaching Medicine, Nurturing Hope
Healing Journeys is the compelling story of 16 ethnically diverse students whose lives have been deeply affected by hardship--from poverty and war to violence and racial injustice --but whose resilience, intellect, and compassion have led to an interest in science and medicine. Since 1987, 381 students like these have come together to participate in an innovative mentoring program at Stanford University. As the students are immersed in the worlds of medicine and higher education, college becomes not only a reality but a stepping stone to making a difference in their communities. Follow their journeys and learn about the program that nurtures their dreams of becoming healers. As author and program founder Dr. Marilyn Winkleby says, "Their stories speak of hope and reaffirm the power of education." The video Opportunity of a Lifetime is a companion piece to this book.

During a five-week summer residential program, it introduces students to the worlds of science, medicine, and academics. This film documents a life-changing experience for the students and their families and inspires viewers through interviews with the student participants, their families, and the Stanford student-counselors who guide the students through the program.
